Alarm Clock // 10.31.05 Did you remember to turn back your clock the other night? I didn't even remember Daylight Savings Time was ending until after Midnight on the 30th. It was in the middle ground, so who knows if it was still the 29th or the 30th. Regardless I had came home and looked at my favorite alarm clock. ![]() analyzing it led to the following images of deconstruction. the best parts of the clock are all based around the simplicity of the clock. the clock has a small footprint. it only requires one double-A battery, which generally last for well over a year's time. the hands are designed simply with glow in the dark material. the longer hand is the hour, the shorter the minute hand, the red is the second hand, and the steel is the alarm. ![]() the time is set using a hidden dial, which is stored behind the battery compartment door. it's not the best placement in my opinion, but if the battery is being changed once every two years, it's not an inconvenience. but if this clock is being used as a travel alarm clock, the dial needs to be in a easier to reach spot. ![]() looking dead on the alarm clock shows the clock set to go off. you can see the tactile button which during the middle of the night can be easily felt and switched on or off. ![]() the shot of the back reveals the raised alarm button, the location of the setting the alarm, and the battery/time set door. ![]() opening the door reveals the battery and the time knob. so i'm proposing a few small items. first add black numbers with glow in the dark materials sublty lining the numbers. second, move the time setting button to the outside of the clock. seeing how the alarm button is textured with dots, the alarm control is set with a pointy knob (reminicent of a small ship wheel), it is reasonable to move a small knob to the left of the alarm setting area. ![]() overall this clock has a great design. it's easy to use, easy to maintain, and easy to view. though aside from the blatant advertisement, the clock does a great job of showing the time in a 12 hour format by eliminating extraneous details and only focuing on the core functionality of the clock. |
