Door Buzzer + Credit Card Checkout // 10.28.05

Today as I was leaving my apt, I watched someone buzzing up to another apt. The buzzer in my building is not working right. the keys stick, odd people get let into the building distributing menus, etc etc etc.

along with not knowing who is at the door, the buttons can be confusing on both ends. so i'd like to propose creating a smarter door buzzer. not one that just has video, but one that allows people greater control to grant and deny access to guests. when a gues comes to your door, and you are not there (or not answering the door), your guest will either leave outright. Or they may leave a message by either calling your home and/or cell phone, but wouldn't it be better if they could leave a message onto you home number or cel phone? without giving the real number, i propose creating a buzzer that residents can tie into their home or cell phone. along with seeing video or live people at the door, an enhanced door buzzer could sport a better interaction. tying in your buzzer into phone may pose some problems, though in the cases of when people stop by and you are not there, or they go to the wrong door, this may help them find the right apt!

on thursday, sean and i went to whole foods to get some lunch. as we were both checking out, we both had odd user experiences with the checkout process. the machine, pictured above, gave us each problems. the inconsistent mappings proved to be confusing and hard to use. i would like to propose making the dialogue simpler. the langauge to use this machine needs to be simplified. customers need the ability to quickly pay for their items and go. but whole foods may have analyzed this and crippled the interaction to keep ppl in the store. the point is that the buttons need a stronger tactile feel and clearer instruction set for all users and languages.
